How to get Apple Magic Mouse Scrolling working in Bootcamp

by Rich G 13. November 2009 07:39

We couldn't wa it to try out the Apple Magic Mouse, nice bit of kit however as we develop using Windows 7 we were disappointed to find the lack of support for scrolling in Windows.

Apple released a Bluetooth Update for their latest IMacs at http://support.apple.com/kb/DL952 however running this on another Mac displays the error "This update is not intended for this computer and will not be installed."

However there is a simple workaround that worked for us, you can just extract the Bluetooth Drivers from the downloaded file above using WinRar, or we've made them available here:

32 bit Apple Wireless Mouse Driver

64 bit Apple Wireless Mouse Driver

This enabled BOTH vertical and horizontal scrolling Firefox and Chrome but not in Windows applications, however this may work depending on what mouse driver you had previously.

If scrolling doesn't work in Windows apps then download Microsofts Intellisense driver from here (Not sure it matters which mouse you choose, but select "Sidewinder X8" to be sure)

Once installed select the "Sidewinder X8 mouse", this enabled Vertical scrolling for all Windows applications.

This was tested on a Mid March Macbook Pro running 64bit Windows 7.

Thanks Guys =)

This almost works, and it's nice to have scrolling in Windows.  Unfortunately the mouse will periodically stop moving on the screen and it takes some shaking (or something, anyway) before it will move again.  Very frustrating.  I'm running this on a MacBook Pro, which may explain why Apple's driver doesn't work yet, but I don't know.  Eagerly awaiting the Boot Camp update later this year!

Thanks for the drivers.  The mouse is now working on Lenovo X60 with Windows 7.  No boot camp.  Clicks and scrolling both work.  No two-finger swipe, but I can live with that.  Please keep in mind that the horizontal scroll events only work in some applications on windows, but is does work in chrome and Microsoft Notepad among others, so I think this is an application issue and not a mouse issue.

Hey Joel, glad to know it works for you; I could not make it work on a Dell latitude D630 with Toshiba bluetooth stack, it installs only normal mouse functionality, no scrolling.
Which bluetooth stak is your x60 running?

As far as you have a Broadcomm bluetooth stack for managing your bluetooth hardware and the above drivers installed, it should (also with scrolling)... To me at least it worked with scroll and all  with a broadcom-compatible BT dongle from ISSC:
- after some tweaking I got the dongle recognized by the broadcom stack provided by apple (!)
- I installed the driver for the Magic Mouse
- I paired the PC and the mouse and enabled the HID service on the mouse
That's it.

I have XP installed on Bootcamp.  I downloaded and installed from this site, the 32bit Apple Wireless Mouse Driver to run on XP Bootcamp.  When I have XP runing on Bootcamp the Bluetooth starts a search for a new device it picks up the Apple Magic Mouse, and ask for the PassKey for parring.  What did you use for the PassKey?  I selected enter no pass Key and after that I selected let the program chose a PassKey for me.  Niether one worked for me.  The only option left is to enter the parring code.  I don't know what I am doing wrong, and could use a little help. Thanks for any help you give me........Art

So you like Apple’s fancy Magic Mouse? Its a beautiful piece of engineering with an insane price tag of $70. Problem is, even at $70, it only works on Macs leaving Windows users in the dust. But thanks to a hidden update here is how you get this little guy to work in Windows XP (32 bit) to Windows 7

Magic Mouse works out of the box. Movement very smooth, but  no scrolling.

After installing the apple drivers, vertical AND horizontal scrolling are working.
BUT mouse now lags and freezes ... its not useable that way.

Any simular experiences oder solutions?

Can someone PLEASE post a step by step guide to getting it to work? I can't find any bluetooth settings, I'm running Windows 7 (64 Bit) on Bootcamp. I can't seem to find the drivers for it after installing them. I'm double clicking the application in the folder. Is that right? When I browse for drivers I only get the option for the Mighty Mouse, I'm obviously missing something but I don't know what. I'm also having problems with the Bluetooth... I tried for ages to find settings but then the mouse just all of a sudden started working but I couldn't get it to scroll. Now I removed the last driver I was using and its stopped working!!! It's annoying the crap out of me!!!

Can't get this mouse to work on XP SP3 at all, not even as a simple point and click.  Trying to use it in bootcamp on a unibody aluminum macbook.  Latest apple drivers (2.2), the 32 driver above, gizmodo's 32 driver...nothing.  Installs and pairs up but I get no response from the mouse at all.  All other bluetooth devices work without a problem.  Whats the secret to getting this thing working on Windows?

Hi to all.
I'm having problems as well.
On my Imac 20", win xp sp3 in bootcamp. Following all instruction from above but no way to make it work.
So now I'm trying to install it on a PC, here at work: Windows xp Sp3 with bluetooth on a usb key. what happened:
1- bluetooth searched for the Magic mouse and found it;
2- installed (with passkey 0000) and worked!! fantastic!! Ok move around the screen, ok for left click and ok for right click; no scrolling at all.
3- downloaded the 32 bit Apple Mouse Wireless drivers for XP; installed them.
4- uninstalled the mouse and reinstalled it: no way to make the magic mouse working!!!
Now the Bluetooth find the mouse and suddenly it starts the hardware installation, it tries to install the Apple Wireless Mouse and then it says: "There has been problems installing the hardware; the peripheral couldn't work properly or couldn't work at all, etc etc". (sorry for the translation but I have the dialogue in Italian).
and it doesn' work at all: no move, no clicks, nothing!!
It seems that the drivers of above create the problems.
any clue or help? thank you in advance!
bye

another clue:
when I tried to install it on my Imac (in bootcamp) BEFORE installing the mouse I downloaded and installed the Apple wireless mouse drivers.
On my imac/bootcamp the mouse never worked.
Today, in my PC, here at work, I "forgot" to install the Apple driver before installing the mouse and I was able to use it for a while.

update!!!
I managed to uninstall completely the Apple Wireless Mouse drivers (after a lot of trouble, following the instructions you can find here: http://winhlp.com/node/199 ), and... voilà!!! the mouse is working now!!!
Still the scrolling doesn't work, but, for my case, the problem was caused by the drivers of above.
But now I have a notsomagic mouse, working.
any help how to make it work?

bye,

I’ve been using the Apple Magic Mouse on my Windows XP Fujitsu notebook for a few weeks as a portable and it gives the standard 2 button function out of the box by just connecting via the built-in bluetooth (Toshiba Bluetooth Stack v.6.00.10(F). The Bluetooth utility recognizes the mouse as the Apple Wireless Mouse, but to Windows it uses the HID Compliant Mouse device and drivers (mouclass.sys and mouhid.sys).

The 32 bit driver install process from this page and link above executes successfully, and creates 4 files in the following directory: C:\WINDOWS\system32\DRVSTORE\applebmt_DF3ADF9808CD93FF6C5F51AC5FFD8B601B9E23E4. The 4 files are: wdfcoinstaller01005.dll, applebmt.cat, applebmt.inf, and applebmt.sys.

I have tried everything I can come up with to try to get these driver files “active” in some way. Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks much,
Curtis

Doesn’t work for me. I tried the whole procedure on a IBM T60 and the mouse is recognized as a Bluethooth Virtual HID device -> HID Compliant mouse. Even after installing the Sidewinder driver nothing change.

I try forcing the installation of the Apple driver. To do that i:

1. Extract the file from "AppleWirelessMouse.exe"
2. In device manager i right-clicked on the "Bluethooth Virtual HID Device" and then choose Update driver
3. Choose "Install from a specific location"
4. Choose "Don't search, i will choose the driver to install"
5. Click on "Have Disk" and point to the folder where i extracted the file

After that a warning is shown where it says that my new device may not work. When i confirm that i want to install it anyway, then the "Bluethooth Virtual HID Device" became "Apple Wireless Mouse" but with a yellow mark on it and the mouse doesn't work anymore.

Any one with the same problem?
